Duality is a public art installation created for an office space in central Tokyo. The installation is integrated into a covered walkway that connects the metro station with adjacent residential and office buildings. It is a transit site surrounded by a large water basin, an artificial pond. This specific spatial situation provided a springboard for the concept. Virtual light waves on the sidewalk and real waves in the water amplify the interaction of "solid" (path) and "liquid" (water).

The white monochrome LED panels are installed on the walkway, measure 4 x 4 meters and are covered with sandblasted opalescent glass. Load cells beneath the glass blocks measure the position and force of each footstep, which triggers a corresponding virtual ripple on the LED panel. When these ripples of light hit the edge of the pond, mechanical actuators seamlessly forward these patterns into physical waves in the water.
Reactive installations blend into the physical space, becoming one with it. Through its responsiveness, duality can communicate with passers-by on an intuitive level, changing their everyday experience and making them identify with the space.
