As the most important public activity space of Suzhou International Design Week, "Fengzhiting" undertakes public functions such as information dissemination and cultural salons during the design cycle. Its design inspiration comes from the undulating roofs of residential settlements in Jiangnan. The roof of traditional residential buildings has been deconstructed into multiple plane geometries and recombined at different heights in the air, forming a space limited by floating roofs - the "Pavilion of the Wind".
The design team abstracts, reassembles, and reconstructs the basic elements of traditional architecture through contemporary and artistic techniques, aiming to stimulate people's rethinking of the possibility of connecting "tradition and the future". This design not only inherits the essence of traditional culture, but also injects elements of modern art, providing visitors with a unique and inspiring experience space, prompting them to have a deeper understanding and reflection on the relationship between tradition and modernity.

Suzhou International Design Week
---
The 2018 Suzhou International Design Week was held in Taohuawu, Gusu District, located in the center of Suzhou, a national historical and cultural city. The Taohuawu area has a city history of over two thousand years and numerous garden relics, making it an important cultural landmark of Suzhou. In this design week event, the MAT team was invited to design a pavilion for the main public activity areas during the design cycle, to undertake public functions such as information dissemination and cultural salons.

With the rise of exhibitions and architectural and art exhibitions, pavilions as a type of architecture have begun to mature. It is a temporary building designed for specific public activities and events, with a focus on the correlation between structural form, spatial shaping, and visitor experience. Generally speaking, the focus of pavilion design is on how to raise the structure from the ground to resist gravity, while its "temporary" characteristics also encourage the design to explore lighter materials and more flexible construction methods.

The design inspiration for Suzhou International Design Week Pavilion comes from traditional Jiangnan residential settlements. Jiangnan residential settlements are characterized by pink walls and black tiles, with their continuous and repetitive mountain walls and undulating roofs creating a strong group form. The design team hopes to recreate this collective form by reassembling the roof: four pillars form a roof, and the branches on each pillar can form another roof with other pillars... This creates a freely growing settlement. Under the layered roof, the free space limited by dense columns becomes the functional and spiritual core of the pavilion.

After considering the comprehensive site factors and functional requirements, the pavilion ultimately chose a six petal layout. The design team abstracted the roofs of traditional residential buildings into multiple plane geometries and recombined them at different heights in the air, forming a space limited by eight floating roofs and eighteen steel columns - the "Wind Pavilion". In this free space, the courtyard landscape also naturally participates. In a sense, this pavilion is like an open-air theater with a caf é, providing people with an ideal place to hold events, enjoy music, watch performances, hold salons, and socialize.

In addition to the main structure, lightweight materials are extensively used in the design of the pavilion to complement its temporary and interactive features. Inspired by the modern operation of materials and culture in the design of Suzhou Museum complex, the roof of the pavilion adopts a semi transparent treatment. The design team cut the solar panels into hexagonal shapes, stacked layer by layer like tiles, and laid them flat on top of the grid roof truss. This design not only provides bright sunlight, but also the texture generated by the overlapping transparent materials is associated with the regional cultural symbols of Suzhou.
The coffee area adopts colored plastic curtains as the facade suspension, which not only enhances the sense of space enclosure, but also conveys the lifestyle theme and core values of equality and vitality of this design week activity through colored transparent materials. In addition, the entrance and interactive area also use peach red elastic line curtains, which not only echo the main visual color scheme of the design week, but also provide a fun place for adults and children to play and interact.

"The Wind Pavilion" is a "big toy style" cultural landmark and also a carrier of various public events during the design week. The design inspiration originates from the basic elements of traditional architecture, but is abstracted, restructured, and reconstructed through contemporary and artistic design techniques. Injecting vitality into the Taohuawu Park by airdropping a free space, bringing new vitality to this region with a strong cultural label. When facing the issue of urban renewal, the design team hopes to maximize the driving force of architectural design, attract new crowds through the creation of new scenes, and at the same time, attempt to stimulate people's rethinking of the possibility of connecting "new and old" and "tradition and future" in the narrative of collision and fusion scenes.

One of the most beautiful pavilions in Suzhou gardens is the "Moon Comes to the Wind Pavilion" in Wangshiyuan, named after a poem by Song Dynasty poet Shao Yong: "When the moon reaches the center of heaven, the wind comes to the water surface.". The "Wind Pavilion" pavilion of Suzhou International Design Week is also hexagonal and faces water on three sides, so it is named "Wind Comes from the Water Surface". Through the design and reflection of this pavilion, we attempt to raise a question during Design Week: How can contemporary Suzhou use the power of design to re lead the humanistic spirit of this millennium old city?
This issue involves the inheritance and innovation of Suzhou's traditional culture, as well as how to integrate contemporary design concepts with urban development. Through the design of the "Wind Pavilion", we can consider how to use modern design techniques to create more dynamic and attractive urban spaces while protecting historical and cultural heritage. This not only involves the design of architecture and landscape, but also needs to consider aspects such as urban planning, public cultural activities, and community participation. Therefore, with the platform of Design Week, we can explore with various sectors of society how to reshape Suzhou's urban image and humanistic spirit in innovative ways, making it more suitable for the needs and development of contemporary society.
