De Donkere Kamer (The Dark Room) is the first permanent exhibition in the Netherlands on the history of Dutch photography. A 250 square meter space in the basement of the Nederlands Fotomuseum (Dutch Photography Museum) in Rotterdam was transformed into a special darkroom. About fifty developing trays are bathed in red light. The light wall opposite the entrance contains a timeline that looks like a large negative. In this modern, interactive darkroom, visitors learn about the development and history of Dutch photography over 185 years through 22 short stories. From daguerreotypes to Polaroids, from dioramas to flickr.com.

Visitor activation story.
By placing a piece of white paper into a developing tray, visitors can activate stories told by photographers, friends, family, connoisseurs, as well as Dutch celebrities such as Hans Dorrestijn and Thom Hoffman, just like in an old darkroom. These stories have been opened to a wide audience, with middle school students being the main focus. All photography materials are sourced from the museum's rich collection. These stories are also accompanied by items such as cameras, original and new prints, and special photography accessories.
At the same time as presenting the presentation, new gemstones will be regularly added to the museum's collection to ensure that the presentation remains up-to-date.
