Conceived from the inside out, the design significantly improves the functionality and visitor experience of the entire museum campus. The project creates a new, fully accessible entrance and a strong east-west axis on Columbus Avenue, creating more than thirty connections between ten different buildings, replacing the former cul-de-sac with a continuous loop . Providing new exhibition, education, collection and research spaces, the Gilder Center also brings previously important backstage functions into public view for the first time, giving visitors a new perspective on the Museum's diverse collections and a comprehensive understanding of active science. Natural modeling processes informed the architecture. The building’s five-story atrium, which resembles a porous geological structure formed by the movement of wind and water, greets incoming visitors like an enchanting landscape waiting to be explored. The atrium structure is open to natural light and also provides captivating views of the different spaces while bridging the physical connections between them. Its structural walls and arches bear the gravity load of the building. It was built using shotcrete, a technique used primarily in infrastructure that sprays structural concrete directly onto a cage of steel bars that was digitally modeled and custom-bent. The technique eliminates the waste of formwork, enabling a seamless, visually and spatially continuous interior whose form extends outward to greet the park and nearby neighbourhood.

The building is clad in Milford pink granite, the same stone used at the entrance to the Central Park West museum. Its round windows use bird-safe sintered glass to prevent birds from hitting surfaces they can't see.

From the central atrium, visitors can easily find and enter the surrounding program spaces - crossing bridges, moving along sculpted edges and through arched openings. These spaces include the Insectarium and Butterfly House, which feature interactive exhibits of live insects and large-scale ecological models of their habitats; and the five-story Collection Core, which houses more than 3 million scientific specimens, with three floors featuring floor-to-ceiling Ceiling's scientific collections exhibit and provide glimpses into working collection areas; Unseen Worlds, an immersive experience showing how all life on Earth is interconnected; expanded research libraries; and state-of-the-art Classrooms, learning laboratories and educational areas serve students from elementary school to professional science teachers.

The Gilder Center’s verticality is key to reducing overall energy demand, with atriums bringing natural light and air circulation deep into the building’s interior. A high-performance envelope with coated security cladding, as well as deeply buried sight and screening shade trees, help to strengthen the building during summer bridge sites. Coupled with an irrigation system and rich native and indigenous vegetation that supports efficient animals, the project's environmental strategy allows the building itself to express the deep care for the natural world that is core to the museum's mission.
