Over the years the library expanded, developing a complex floor plan and optional architectural expressions. Bringing the institution into its 21st century, increasing the library's community outreach and enhancing the visitor experience, Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Architectus have revitalized an extraordinary cultural institution and created innovative new spaces for children and youth. Library services have been revitalized to embrace new technologies and promote digital literacy and creativity. The design incorporates existing qualities while providing new connections and providing a framework for the library's current and future growth.

Within the new Russell Street entrance is the new Baldwin Spencer Hall, a warm, welcoming space that anchors the library on an urban scale.
Baldwin Spencer Hall now houses a lounge and meeting space called the Russell Street Welcome Area, which includes the new Guild Café and the Readings bookstore, which was relocated from the west end of the library.
Works by local visual artist Tai Snaith span the 29-metre-high walls, and the grand space is anchored by restored original jarrah floors, a hardwood native to Australia.

The State Library of Victoria is the ultimate institution of memory. Its role as guardian of the past and curator of the future is crucial. With its new facilities, it will also, like the library, become a center for creating new knowledge for future generations.

The State Library of Victoria has undergone several expansions since it first opened in 1856. The library, which consists of 23 buildings, faced the challenge of a complex, disconnected floor plan that made it difficult for visitors to navigate and access the library's many services. Additionally, numerous extensions resulted in an eclectic architectural expression.
To address these issues and confirm its status as the cultural heart of Melbourne, the refurbishment of the State Library of Victoria aims to create a modern and consistent design line and unlock the possibility to create strong physical and visual connections throughout the site and provide A modern framework that aligns with user needs and expectations, thereby supporting the library's ongoing and future growth.

The architectural design concept is user-centered, providing an open, accessible and welcoming experience for people of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
During the design process, we held a series of co-creation workshops to allow users to directly participate in the redevelopment of the library. Input from children, young people and their families helps provide insight into what their dream library would look like, their needs and what they would like to see in the new facility.

Central to the architectural concept was the desire to weave the building's many spaces together through a contemporary architectural narrative. Prior to the reconstruction, the library's layout drew visitors through a series of spaces, making it easy for people to leave the building without fully appreciating the library's diversity. A more comprehensive experience is now created through clear thresholds and spatial hierarchies that physically and visually connect various areas of the library to support seamless movement between collections.
The space is already visible and directly accessible, allowing visitors to move around the library more intuitively, exploring and discovering all its treasures
The crown jewel - the 163-year-old Ian Potter Queen's Hall - has reopened to the public after 16 years. During the restoration process, the space was stripped back to reveal its former beauty and original paint job. Peeling back and uncovering layers of history enhances the sense of stewardship of the library’s incredible legacy.
Rediscovering unique remnants of the past unlocks the building’s potential and helps the library regain its role as a true cultural and public center in the city – a place where people engage, learn, socialize and be inspired.

The 1910 marble staircase was also reopened for the first time since 2003, retaining the original worn marble and revealing it under new covering.
The renovation is part of the library’s ongoing development to provide a strong and consistent design language. This concept transcends the scope of the work and provides a framework to guide future pieces; a strong, identifiable idea that guides all decisions.
